NET ZERO INFILL DISCOVERY 5 HOME
Location: Calgary, Alberta
Project Type: Single Family Infill
Key Goals: Net Zero
Services: Custom Home Design
Status: Completed 2012
Project Credit: This home was designed by fpdb co-founder, Dave Silburn, while working at SAIT Green Building Technologies.
The Discovery 5 home is a 2250 sqft, two bedroom infill Net Zero home located in the Calgary community of Altadore. Designed as a Net Zero research home with Avalon Master Builder, D5 produces more energy than it consumes on an annual basis and features passive solar glazing, an active solar chimney in addition to roof and garage mount photovoltaics. A 2×8 spray foam stud wall with R60 attic and R40 basement reduce the heating and cooling loads dramatically.
In addition to meeting a Net Zero energy standard, the home optimizes its water consumption by conveying over 14,000 liters from its rainwater cistern to toilets, cold water laundry, green roof, living wall and onsite xeriscaped irrigation. Interior elements include reclaimed 1” maple flooring, custom fabricated kiln dried staircase and mantle, and radiant concrete floors tied to a smart mechanical system that optimizes passive solar heating. A high efficiency E.R.V. distributes continuous fresh air for impeccable indoor air quality throughout the home. A guest bedroom, solar powered hot tub and a pub in the basement, make this home enjoyable for friends and family year round.
