Near Zero Carbon Foothills County Residence

NEAR ZERO CARBON CUSTOM HOME

Location: Foothills County, Alberta

Project Type: Single Family Acreage Home

Key Goals: Net Zero, Near Zero Carbon

Services: Custom Home Design

Status: Completed 2019

Project Credit: This home was designed by fpdb co-founder, Dave Silburn, while working at SAIT Green Building Technologies.

This Near Zero Carbon residence is a contemporary east coast style, walkout saltbox bungalow that blends a high performance sustainable envelope, european windows and a carriage house heavy timber breezeway with modern interior finish and furnishings. Built to meet an operational zero carbon standard, the home’s minimal energy load has been offset with onsite solar modules on both the garage/carriage house and the principal residence.

Sheltered from prevailing winds, the northwest side of the home hugs a walk out basement and main floor deck, overlooking a seasonal stream and 152 acres of prairie farmland with Rocky Mountain views. Vaulted ceilings with exposed wood rafters and expansive panoramic windows flood the living space with natural light, showcasing uninterrupted views of the surrounding landscape.
